Shark! Cage Diving with Kenz
So I finally found some more of the pictures I took when Mackenzie Horner was here in may/June. I knew I had some good ones of shark cage diving and I finally got them off my sister's camera.
While we were in Cape Town the first week kenz was here, one of the things she wanted to do was Cage Diving to see the sharks. So, Jackie, Sahara, Jessie James the Jack Russell, Kenz and I, loaded into the car one dark morning to head to Gaansbaai (pronounced "Hans-bye"). The boat was leaving at like 8 or something and it's a 90 minute drive, so it was still dark when we got in the car.
We got there, got signed in, and off we went to the marina. Gaansbaai is on the coast, southeast of Cape Town. The boat goes out into the ocean for about 30 minutes then everyone grabs a wet suit and gets ready to get in the cage. It was a fairly windy day and the swells were sort of high and the water fairly choppy. So, no surprise, people starting getting a bit sea sick. Big trouble as kenz has a serious thing with people puking anywhere near her. I knew that, but it never even occured to me. So with all the people throwing up off the side of the boat became pretty upsetting for her. The big surprise was that Kenz, who has grown up on boats, got sick too. She wasn't physically sick thank goodness, but pretty much couldn't move. Other big surprise, I, who can get motion sick driving to the grocery store in stop and go traffic, wasn't sick at all.
Anyway, Kenz managed to get herself into a wet suit and into the cage. Kenz is second from the right on the second one. (Click picture to enlarge).
It was an awesome day to see sharks, too. We saw seven different sharks and they passed the cage several times. Here are some pictures of the sharks. They get really close. At least once, the shark dove at and hit the front of the cage when the bait was pulled into it.
I think Kenz had fun, despite being sick. Here's one of her getting out of the cage. You can tell by the look on her face it was an awesome experience.
