Hlu Hluwie
In mid December we were off on another weekend roadtrip, this time to Hlu Hluwie (pronounced Shloo shloo-wee) down in Zululand, in the south eastern part of South Africa, along the Swaziland border. It's maybe 6 or 7 hours drive, but again, the countryside is so beautiful to see. We dropped Jesse off at Len's in Nigel, then off we went. Hlu Hluwie has a game park that we went through. We stayed at a very nice backpackers bush camp called Insinkwe. Again, very nice, and basically camping, in cabins.
The game park was amazing, and we self-drove through rather than arranging to go on an open sided overland truck. It was a good thing too, as we could go where we wanted and also, it is a real must have since we have Sahara. Plus, it was about 40.5 degrees Celsius (about 110 Farenheit). Being that hot, the animals weren't as visible as they might be in cooler temps. But, we did see tons of them and they were really really close. In fact, we saw more animals than I saw in Kruger Park back in May. We saw buffalo and rhino, both white and black, and tons of giraffe and zebra.

And we saw a family of warthogs...Pemba! Here is an adult with a baby following behind. Cute!

We also saw a few monkeys but not many. We saw these ones fairly early in the day, then at the end of the day, just before heading back to the gate, we saw a bunch more but they ran before we could get the camera ready.

And for those of you who have heard of the famous dung beetle, here is one we saw on the way.

I have to say, while Kruger is the more well known fame park, i enjoyed Hlu Hluwie much more and I like the area better.
